[tex] \dfrac{1}{2} + \dfrac{3}{8} + \dfrac{4}{8} = \dfrac{4}{8} + \dfrac{3}{8} + \dfrac{4}{8} = \dfrac{4+ 3 + 4}{8} = \dfrac{11}{8} = 1\dfrac{3}{8} [/tex]

1/2 = 4/8

4/8 + 3/8 + 4/8 = 11/8

(the denominator stays the same)

Answer = 11/8 or 1 3/8
